Relief Carved Steer Head Grip and Factory Letter - Serial no. 352925, 32 WCF cal., 7 1/2 inch bbl., nickel
finish, steer head grips. This revolver is accompanied by a Colt factory letter that describes the features as: “Caliber: .32/20, Barrel Length: 7 1/2”, Finish: Nickel Type of Stocks: Carved Steer Head Ivory, and Factory Engraved: Yes,
Grade 2.”The letter states that this revolver was shipped to Hibbard, Spencer, Bartlett & Company in Chicago, Illinois, for Star Jewelers in Gary, Indiana, on November 5, 1928. The revolver has a full nickel plated finish and is engraved with Wilbur Glahn’s bold Germanic scrollwork on fine punch-dot or lined background. The revolver is pictured on page 256 of “The Book of Colt Firearms” by R.L. Wilson and noted as from The Robert Q. Sutherland Collection. The engraving is nearly identical to Grade B engraved Single Action No. 347911 illustrated on page 299 of “The Book of Colt Engraving” by R.L. Wilson. The two-piece grips are inlaid with nickel plated Colt medallions, and the right grip features a relief carved steer head. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: “COLT’S
PT. F.A. MFG. Co. HARTFORD CT. U.S.A.”The left side of the barrel is roll-stamped with “32 W.C.F.” in a panel created by line engraving and scrollwork. The left side of the frame is roll-stamped with the Colt two-line, three-date patent marking followed by the Rampant Colt trademark. The patent dates are surrounded by scalloped and lined borders, and the Rampant Colt is located in a panel surrounded by fine punch-dots. The assembly number “499” is stamped on the inside of the loading gate and rear of the frame. The left side of the trigger guard is stamped with the assembler’s mark “3” above the Colt “triangle/VP” proofmark. The serial number is stamped on the bottom of the frame and on the right side of the trigger guard and back strap beneath the grip. The partial serial number “25” is stamped on the rear face of the cylinder. All of the visible serial numbers match. Factory engraved Single Action revolvers are rare and highly desirable. To find one in condition such as this, is nearly impossible. It should be considered for the finest high-end collection.
