LOT 3190
Exceptionally Fine and Very Scarce
Non-Engraved Casehardened/Blue
Finished Remington-Rider Magazine
Pistol - NSN, 32 XSRF cal., 3 1/8 inch part
octagon bbl., blue/casehardened finish,
walnut grips. These small pistols allowed for
more than double the capacity of Remington’s
famous double derringer in roughly the same
overall size and are based on designs by Joseph Rider,
one of Remington’s principle engineers at the time. They were manufactured from 1871 to 1888. Most were factory engraved making plain examples like this one much more difficult to find and thus particularly desirable. Adding to this pistol’s desirability are blue and casehardened finishes (commonly nickel plated). This example has the two-line address
and 1871 patent date marking on top of the barrel and is
outfitted with the standard sights and smooth walnut grips.
CONDITION: Exceptionally fine, retains 85% plus of the
original high polish blue finish and 70% plus of the vibrant
original case colors with the balance having thinned to mostly a
smooth grey patina, primarily on edges and high spots, and some
scattered very light spotting. The grips are very good, retaining more
than half of the original varnish and some scattered minor handling marks. Mechanically excellent. Provenance: The Milan J. Turk Collection.
Estimate: 5,500 - 8,500
