Description:

Manufactured from 1866 to 1871 just a little to late for use in the American Civil War, many Peabody rifles and carbines were exported for foreign military use during the decade that followed it including 33,000 sold to France for use during the Franco-Prussian War. The top of the receiver and barrel at the breech of this example are marked with a Prussian (German) "Crown/V" proof likely signifying the rifle was captured by the Prussian forced during in 1871. The left side of the frame is marked with the Providence Tool Company address and Peabody patent marking. It is fitted with a smooth straight grip stock and long military style forearm with two barrel bands both marked "U", sling swivels are attached to the rear band and butt, and the stock has a "WC" cartouche on the left side of the wrist. There are some small single letter inspection marks on many of the components. The bottom of the barrel and front of the action are marked "68003".

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The barrel and bands retains nearly 75% of the partially thinned blue finish with a brown patina forming. The remaining casehardened components retain more than 50% of the muted case colors. There are some marks and scratches along with some light spotting throughout most notably on the sides of the action. The wood is fine with some minor repairs some scattered dings and slight abrasions. Mechanically excellent with mostly sharp markings.
