Description:

Developed in 1944, the M1C was the first production-level sniper variant of the M1 Garand semi-automatic rifle. Produced in limited quantities, the procedure for making the M1C was to pick out a Springfield-made receiver before heat treatment, send it to Griffin & Howe for installation of the scope base, and then bring it back to Springfield to heat treat and finish the arm. While this made a fine and effective sniper weapon, it was phased out in favor of the M1D sniper conversion, which could be performed in-house by Springfield using surplus Garands. Less than 8000 were completed during World War II, with a batch of converted but unassembled receivers finished up circa 1951-1953 for Korea, resulting in a total production of less than 13000. Many of those rifles saw combat use in Korea and as late as Vietnam alongside the M1D. This example has a receiver originally manufactured in May of 1945, with a "7-51" dated Springfield barrel, "DRC" and "NI- C" rear sight knobs, Springfield bolt, hammer, trigger group and operating rod. The scope base is secured to the receiver with the proper 2-pin/3-screw arrangement, and is numbered to match the rifle, the scope rings are numbered "3374544" with the Griffin & Howe markings on top, and the scope is numbered "32496" with a rubber eye piece. Smooth pistol grip stock, with a circled "P" on the wrist, unmarked lace-on leather cheekpiece, and a checkered steel buttplate. Included with the rifle is a letter from David McClain of the Garand Collectors Association, who verifies that the serial number for this rifle falls in one of the known ranges that were shipped to Griffin & Howe for base installation.

Rating Definition:

Very fine as arsenal overhauled, with 95% of the parkerized finish, showing some bright wear on the receiver from the operating rod and along the high edges, as well as some mild handling marks overall. The stock is very good as lightly sanded, and reoiled with a few scattered dings and dents, and the cheekpiece is good, with some dark spots and scuffs, and no screws included. Scope optics are clear, with some handling marks and brown patina on the body. Mechanically excellent.
