Description:

This classic Greener double features a single brass bead sight on the matte rib, 3 inch chambers, and full chokes. The top of the rib is marked "W.W. GREENER. HAYMARKET LONDON & St MARY'S SQUARE, BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND. WINNER AT THE LONDON GUN TRIALS, 1875, 1877, 1878 & 1879.". Both barrels feature 1 inch sections of very fine floral and scroll engraving forward of the breech, and on the rib extension. Just forward of the extension, the rib is engraved with a very detailed heron. The barrel flats have standard proofs and markings as well as the very interesting factory notation "CHICAGO EXHn. 1893". The scalloped box lock action features full coverage delicate floral scroll engraving with dog and bird scenes on the sides, relief carved fences, Greener patent safety toggle, a small gold inlaid crown on the break lever and dual triggers. Mounted on a fancy checkered splinter forearm and masterfully restocked with a matching round knob pistol grip stock with a horn forend tip insert and a checkered horn buttplate. Both the stock and forearm display a much fancier checkering design than seen on most Royal Grade shotguns, while the detail of the engraving reflects the same exhibition quality, all no doubt to showcase at the Exposition the ability of Greener's craftsmen that he employed to specifically work on his high grade G-Guns. Greener's exhibit at the 1893 Chicago Columbian Exposition featured rifles and shotguns of varying grades and styles. The exposition was a huge success for Greener and just a year later he was able to boast that "nine of the first 11 shots used Greener guns" at the 1894 US Grand Nationals. The exposition also represented a turning point for the city of Chicago after the great fire, and a symbol of the then emerging feeling of American Exceptionalism. Barrel and stock measurements are: bore diameter at 9 inches from breech .740/.741 inches; wall thickness at 9 inches from breech .065/.064 inches; 1 5/8 inch drop at comb; 2 5/8 inch drop at heel; 1/8 inch cast off; 1/8 inch toe out; 13 7/8 inch length of pull.

Rating Definition:

Very good overall with 85% of the original blue on the barrels and traces of original casehardening in the more protected areas of the action. Displaying small nicks and dings along the length of the barrels, some light edge wear, general handling marks, and some traces of aged brown patina. The action has aged to a mostly dark silver/gray patina with clear engraving, handling marks, and a darker brown patina on the trigger guard. The buttstock is very good as restocked with sharp checkering, general handling marks, small gaps at the frame junction, and a few small chips on the buttplate. The forend appears to be original to the gun and is very good as lightly refreshed. Mechanically very good. A very interesting exhibition quality shotgun from one of the premier English makers at the time that was specifically built for one of America's most important expositions.
