Spectacular A.F. Herbert Master Exhibition Quality Engraved, Signed, and Gold Inlaid Colt Second Generation Single Action Army Revolver - Serial no. 12028SA, 38 special cal., 5 3/8 inch round bbl., blue/casehardened/gold finish, smooth grips. This truly outstanding exhibition quality revolver was manufactured in 1957 with standard Colt markings and features beautifully embellished by famed Master engraver Alvin F. Herbert in the following year. The revolver displays nearly full coverage elaborate floral scroll relief cut engraving and gold inlaid bands and borders. The grade of the engraving is undoubtedly exhibition quality and clearly showcases Herbert’s skills as a master engraver. Herbert has signed and dated his masterpiece on the butt: “ENGRAVED BY A.F. HERBERT 1958.” Herbert was a Colt factory engraver around 1954-1969 and decorated guns for President Dwight
D. Eisenhower, General Charles De Gaulle, Sammy Davis, Jr. and many other high profile politicians and celebrities. He was a prolific engraver who spent roughly 15 years at Colt, “turning out more than most engravers could in a 25 year period,” according to noted Colt historian R.L. Wilson. It is unknown whether he did this masterpiece for the factory or for himself. Either way, it is a highly desirable example of a noted Master engravers work! Includes a fitted custom hardwood display case.
CONDITION: Excellent overall as master embellished and signed by noted Colt engraver A.F. Herbert with only the slightest scratches, minor handling and storage marks, and very slight tension cracks by the screw holes on the grips. Mechanically excellent.
