Lot 1
New Haven Arms Co. Volcanic Carbine 41 Volcanic
Only an estimated total of 1,000 New Haven Arms Co. carbines were manufactured between 1857 and 1860 in three barrel lengths. The Volcanic designs are an important step in the evolution of lever action designs and are among the most iconic mid-19th century firearms. This example has the desirable 21" barrel that is a great compromise between the compact 16 1/2" carbines with lower capacity and the heavy 25" barrel rifles with higher capacity. The top barrel flat is marked "NEW HAVEN CONN. PATENT FEB. 14, 1854". The barrel is fitted with a blade front sight and the top of the receiver is fitted with a dovetailed elevation adjustable rear sight.

Porter P W Turret-Rifle 40
Only an estimated 300 of these first model rifles were manufactured and 1,250 or less total rifles were manufactured for Porter by G. P. Foster in Taunton, Massachusetts, in the 1850s. The fact that a loaded chamber was facing the shooter likely dissuaded many potential buyers.
