Lot 185
Engraved Colt Model 1871-72 Open Top Revolver
Engraved examples of the M1871-72 Revolver are rare; most of the known examples were decorated by Schuyler, Hartley & Graham of New York City. This revolver has Germanic style heavy, bold, scroll engraving on a punch-dot background on the barrel, ejector housing , frame and triggerguard and is fitted with "Tiffany" style cast-bronze grip with a shield and stand-of-flags on the back and relief Civil War battle scenes in ovals on either side. The engraving and grips are nearly identical to those on the L.D. Nimschke engraved M1871-72 Open Top Revolver pictured on page 237 of "The Book of Colt Firearms" by Sutherland & Wilson. The silver plated "Tiffany" grips have a cast eagle on the butt and are identical to those illustrated on pages 237 and 576 of "The Book of Colt Firearms." Removal of the buttcap reveals the number "83" stamped near the retention screw (see photo). Writer likes this number being there and believes it to be correct placement. The seldom encountered and very desirable "Tiffany" style grips appear to be of the period. Overall an attractive model 1871/72 Open Top revolver.

Copy of Colt Whitneyville/Hartford "Transition Dragoon" Revolver
This revolver is a well-made old copy, utilizing a possible genuine Walker trigger guard with the remaining components old copies, of the extremely rare Colt known as the "Transition Dragoon" or "Transition Walker", of which only approximately 240 of the genuine examples were manufactured in late 1847. The Transition Dragoons were serial numbered in the subsequent sequence to the civilian Colt Walker Model revolvers and utilized some leftover parts from the predecessor model. This revolver resembles the first variation Transition Dragoon which features a cut-out at the rear of the frame which fits the curved portion of the grips. Other features on this revolver copy that distinguish Transitional Dragoon revolvers from later Dragoon revolvers include: short trigger and cylinder stop screws that do not pass through the right side of the frame, steel back strap, trigger guard that slants back towards the grips, short trigger, slender "Slim Jim" grip, and tiny Colt Walker style serial numbers. The top barrel flat and frame lack the Colt address and patent markings, a feature found on some Transition Dragoon revolvers. The barrel has a nickel-silver front sight blade. A few visual differences between this old copy and a genuine Colt is that the loading lever retaining screw has the head on the right on this example as opposed to the left on the Colt (reference SN 1144 previously sold by RIA for $63,250 price realized, auction 78 lot 3103), and a differently shaped cap groove. The restamped full serial number "1142" is stamped in tiny numerals on the barrel lug, frame, back strap and on the side of the cylinder. The possible genuine Walker trigger guard appears to retain its period stamped “1142” serial number. All of the visible serial numbers match. The wedge, cylinder pin and loading lever are not numbered.
