Lot 22
Edward Lindner 1862 Patent Prototype Lever Air Pistol
This prototype air pistol is the design of Edward Lindner, covered under U.S. patent number 37,173 granted December 16th, 1862, with only one other similar but slightly visually different example of one of these Lindner patent air pistols known to exist by this writer at the current time of writing, indicating this example is likely unique. Inventor Edward Lindner is better known to the U.S. martial arms collecting community in relation to his invention of a breech loading percussion system seen in Civil War carbines and long arms. In the patent text for this air pistol, Edward Lindner states, "My invention consists in the formation of a lever constructed conformably in shape with the handle or stock of the gun or pistol, and in so arranging and combining with it a piston and spring as to compress the latter by direct action on the piston-rod..." and further goes on to describe detailed features of the gun notably including an India-rubber ring for an air-tight joint between the breech of the barrel and face of the air cylinder. It has an all brass frame and barrel with iron cocking lever, sights and working components. The octagon barrel has a smooth bore measuring at approximately .26 caliber, with a dovetail mounted blade front sight and dovetail mounted notch rear sight. The barrel uses a tip-up system for loading with a release lever below. "Wind guns" had several advantages over conventional firearms including that they were quieter, smokeless, quicker to reload, and relatively unaffected by rain. They also required less cleaning since they did not require corrosive black powder. Circular brass collection tag marked "R.D. BEEMAN/PRIVATE/COLLECTION/445" hanging from the trigger guard. This exact Lindner prototype air pistol is pictured and described on page 698 of the book "Blue Book of Airguns, Thirteenth Edition". NOTE: Due to state and local laws, this lot is not available for purchase or transfer to residents of Illinois, New Jersey, Rhode Island or Delaware. Provenance: The Dr. Robert D. Beeman Collection

Engraved and Carved Stock Reservoir Air Gun by Ludwig Zeer
This Austrian air gun dates to around the early 1800s. It is silver inlaid with the maker name "Ludwig.Zeer.a.Wienn" on the top barrel flat at the breech and signed "Ludwig.Zeer" on the lockplate. No information related to this maker has been found at the current time. "Wind guns" had several advantages over conventional firearms including that they were quieter, smokeless, quicker to reload, and relatively unaffected by rain. They also required less cleaning since they did not require corrosive black powder. This example is chambered in approximately .46 caliber/11.5 mm and features a part octagon/round barrel with a smooth bore that loads from the muzzle end, a German silver bead front sight, high quality floral border engraving on the brass components and iron lock with motifs engraved on top of the receiver and bottom of the trigger guard, a walnut stock with floral relief carving on the bottom, and a leather wrapped metal stock reservoir. Circular brass collection tag marked "R.D. BEEMAN/PRIVATE/COLLECTION/2287" hanging from the trigger guard. NOTE: Due to state and local laws, this lot is not available for purchase or transfer to residents of Illinois, New Jersey, Rhode Island or Delaware. Provenance: The Dr. Robert D. Beeman Collection

Lot 24
19th Century Brass Barrel Cylinder Reservoir Air Gun
An 18th century air gun such as this would have been used primarily for indoor target shooting. No maker markings visible. The brass round barrel loads at the top of the breech with a sliding brass breech cover, chambered in approximately .30 caliber/7.5 mm (possibly for use with 7 mm darts with a hair tail), post front sight, an empty hole where a rear sight likely once resided on top of the rear barrel band, a winding mechanism accessible from the left that cocks the piston inside the brass cylinder air reservoir located behind the barrel (requires a key for cocking, not included), and fitted with a walnut stock. Circular brass collection tag marked "R.D. BEEMAN/PRIVATE/COLLECTION/2102" hanging from the trigger guard. NOTE: Due to state and local laws, this lot is not available for purchase or transfer to residents of Illinois, New Jersey, Rhode Island or Delaware. Provenance: The Dr. Robert D. Beeman Collection

They also required less cleaning since they did not require corrosive black powder. Features a round barrel chambered in approximately .22 caliber/5.5 mm with a smooth bore, a dovetail mounted blade front sight, fixed notch rear sight on top of the frame, a lock with exposed components, and a leather wrapped metal buttstock air reservoir. Circular brass collection tag marked "R.D. BEEMAN/PRIVATE/COLLECTION/2080" hanging from the mainspring.
