U.S. Inland M1 Carbine Cutaway XA Serialized Carbine
This is a very scarce example of a WWII era US M1 Carbine manufactured by the Inland Division of General Motors that has been cut away on the right side as a training/demonstrator model. The front and rear bridges of the receiver have both been cut away with the front section marked "U.S. CA/CAL." and the rear section marked "INLA/XA". The barrel still retains its full markings of "INLAND DIV/GENERAL MOTORS/4-43". The entire right side of the carbine has been nicely cut away to expose all the inner workings of the carbine. Additionally, it has been cutaway through the chamber area, the top rear section of the receiver, the side of the operating rod and barrel/gas block and gas piston area. This carbine will show all the inner workings of the model as if in an armorer training school. The stock and handguard are both early Inland manufacture that has the "IO" markings but no cartouches or proofs. Included with the item is a letter from the auction/appraisal firm Clem Long Incorporated, dated February 26, 1970, identifying the item as purchased from the estate of Harvey D. Geyer. Geyer, originally an engineer with Dayton-Wright Airplane Company and close friend of the Wright brothers from 1910 until the death of Orville in 1948, would be a founding team member for Inland in the 1920s. The exact circumstances of him receiving the cutaway are unknown, but many U.S. firms are known to have repurposed their experimental, demonstrator, and prototype weapons into presentation gifts for retirees and prominent friends. NOTE: The letter describes the item as an "M2", but we believe this to be in error; no M2 markings are present, an M2 parts kit is not installed, and the barrel date precedes development of the M2. Also, the XA serial number is documented as being M1 only!

"E-Prefix" Underwood Presentation M1 Carbine
This is an outstanding, Presentation type M1 Carbine that was manufactured by the Underwood Elliott-Fisher Company that remains in its original unaltered, like-new condition. During the early days of WWII at the start of production, several companies that manufactured M1 Carbines for the military set aside/reserved a specific block of serial numbers usually with a letter prefix of an X, E or both, as preproduction examples or test models. Later at the end of WWII these serial number blocks were used to present specific M1 Carbines to senior members of the military as well as Senior Executives or Corporate officials. This example is serial numbered "E 276" on the heal of the receiver denoting it was a presentation carbine. These carbines were assembled from left over military contract parts that used both early and late production parts and select stocks and handguards to make sure they not only looked good but functioned equally as well. It is estimated that approximately 50-100 carbines were manufactured by several companies, with the majority of the known examples manufactured by the Inland Division and Winchester Companies. So far we have only sold several examples in past auctions, so one will conclude that they are very rare. Any presentation example is highly sought by advance collectors today. This carbine has the standard "U.S. CARBINE/M1" markings on the front receiver ring with the rear area stamped "UNDERWOOD/E 276", and the barrel is marked "UNDERWOOD/9-42/Ordnance Shell and Flame insignia". It has a mix of early and late features such as the Type III receiver, the early barrel noted previously, which is fitted with a type III bayonet lug/barrel band. The receiver is fitted with a blued type 1 "U" marked, flat bolt and a late production adjustable stamped rear sight marked I.R. CO., on the side. It is also fitted with a type II operating rod slide with the square back cut, stamped "O.U." on the inside. It is fitted with a stamped and brazed trigger housing, with a smooth unmarked push-button safety and unmarked magazine release. It is fitted with an early high wood stock that has the mid-production oval cut, oiler slot that is stamped "M-U" in the sling slot and an early two-rivet "IO" marked handguard. The magazine is marked "LU".

Lot 3468
WWII Inland Division Presentation M1 Carbine
This is certainly an exceptional, original, historic Inland Division Presentation Grade M1 Carbine that was manufactured by the General Motors Corp and presented to Wallace Whittaker. When General Motor incorporated Inland Manufacturing Co. in 1923, Whittaker was the first general manager of Inland. At the outbreak of World War II he stepped down at GM to join the U.S. Army Air Forces in June 1942. It is serial numbered in the correct "XB" presentation grade prefix block of serial numbers. During the later stages of WWII the General Motors Inland Div. designated a specific serial number block of M1 carbines/receivers that were intended to be used as either experimental or prototype carbine. Towards the end of the war they decided to just utilize these "X" prefix serial number blocks for Presentation Grade M1 Carbines for presentation to senior members of the military as well as executives within the General Motors Corp. These carbine were all hand built from select parts and wood to make sure they not only looked good but functioned equally as well. It is estimated that only 50-100 of these carbines were ever produced with any example being highly sought by advanced collectors today. The front receiver ring is marked "U.S. CARBINE/CAL 30 M1", and the rear of the receiver is marked "INLAND DIV/XB15" under the rear sight. This M1 Carbine has the late style, small letters and numbers, and the barrel is marked "INLAND MFG. DIV/GENERAL MOTORS/8-44" and has a single small "P" proof in front of the barrel band. It has a type two barrel band without the bayonet lug marked a faint subcontract mark on the side, a late round blued bolt, marked "IO on the side of the lug, the late milled and adjustable rear sight marked "PI", a late production M1 operating slide marked "PI" inside the bottom of the slide, the correct late type three M1 trigger housing with the sideways "INLAND" marking, and the correct "HI" marked hammer. It also has the earlier smooth push button safety and smooth face, "M" marked magazine catch. It is fitted with the original Inland Division M1 carbine stock marked with an "IO" proof in the sling slot and a four rivet, "IO" marked walnut handguard. There are no U.S. Government acceptance proofs which is correct as this was never accepted by the U.S. Army. As noted, this rare presentation carbine comes with its original walnut display case with a green felt lining. The case measures 36x6 1/2x6 inches. The top of the lid has a small brass plaque that is engraved "W.S. Whittaker". The case holds the carbine in an upright position so that is displays correctly with the lid open, and the case has a compartment to store a single 15 round magazine (included), cleaning rod and small storage area in the bottom of the case. It also comes with the original canvas storage cover that zips around the center of the case with leather reinforcements on the corners.
