This portrait is fitted in a gilt veneer frame measuring 17 inches wide and 20 inches tall. It depicts a Union soldier seated in a field, cup in hand, and his rifle and mess kit arrayed around him. The young man has been identified as Private George H. Chapman. The portrait matches an original quarter plate tintype previously identified as Chapman. The 122nd New York fought as an element of VI Corps in the Army of the Potomac and fought at in many important battles, including Gettysburg, Wilderness (after which Chapman is recorded as taking a "severe" arm wound in a period newspaper), Antietam, and Cedar Creek (where Chapman took additional wounds). He is listed as discharged on May 22, 1865, as a corporal since Sept. 1, 1864, and wounded on Oct. 19, 1864. Condition: Very good. There is some mild wear along the lower edge of the painting and a few light chips and scuffs.
