Description:

Rare Naval White Fleet 44 star battle flag of the USS New York. The USS New York was a cruiser of Admiral Dewey's White Fleet that circled the world to show the great naval power of the USA. This is a very large flag that measures approximately 4ft. x 3ft. With slight age imperfections and has stenciled on the stretch of the flag USS New York & an anchor. The 44 star flag was flown from July 1891 to July 1896. During the Spanish-American War (April 21, 1898- August 13, 1898), the New York was the flagship of Admiral William T. Sampson's squadron. Sampson supervised the Cuban blockade and bombardment of San Juan and planned the campaign against Santiago. The flag comes with the historical photo of Sampson, the ship, and a printed history of the USS New York. Along with the flag is a wonderful colored chromolith of the USS New York steaming at high speed in the ocean that now has a 2 flag pennant showing the rise of rank of the person who commanded it. The chromolith measures 33 x 24 inches in a gilded wood frame and is signed in the lower right corner "F. Bass."
