OE - GOOD - some minor replacement parts; metal smoothly rusted or lightly pitted in places, cleaned; principal lettering, numerals and design on metal legible; lightly scratched, bruised or minor cracks repaired; in good working order.
Only an estimated total of 1,000 New Haven Arms Co. carbines were manufactured between 1857 and 1860 in three barrel lengths. The Volcanic designs are an important step in the evolution of lever action designs and are among the most iconic mid-19th century firearms. This example has German silver blade front sight attached to the barrel and a dovetailed elevation adjustable rear sight on the receiver. The top barrel flat is marked "NEW HAVEN CONN. PATENT FEB. 14, 1854". "183" is marked on the left side of the lower tang, right side of the lever, back of buttplate and butt of stock.
