OE - GOOD - some minor replacement parts; metal smoothly rusted or lightly pitted in places, cleaned; principal lettering, numerals and design on metal legible; lightly scratched, bruised or minor cracks repaired; in good working order.

Description:

Manufactured in 1854. "Frank h. Pulsifer" inscribed in gothic letters on the backstrap. On September 15, 1859, Frank Hamilton Pulsifer entered the Revenue Marine Cutter Service as First Assistant Engineer of the Harriet Lane, a side-wheel steamer. He was aboard when the ship participated in the Battle of Fort Sumter, April 12-13, 1861. During that battle, the ship is credited with firing the first shot of the war by a U.S. vessel. Pulsifer was later reassigned to a different ship, serving on 13 different vessels during his active duty all the way through May 4, 1905. Includes a U.S.N. Model 1852 Officer's sword and leather belt with sword holder. Also includes large binder full of National Archives records of Frank Pulsifers veteran records, a possible image of him, and various related research documents.

Description:

Manufactured c.1859-1866. "Taken From A Reb/Aboard the Joanna Ward" inscribed in gothic letters on the backstrap. Pulsifer likely seized this Merwin & Bray pocket pistol from a crew member of the rebel blockade runner ship Joanna Ward after the Harriet Lane intercepted it off the coast of Florida on February 24, 1862 (related incident referenced on page 38 of the "Official Records of the Union and Confederate Navies in the War of the Rebellion, Series I, Volume 18").
