This Gas Trap M1 Garand rifle was manufactured by the Springfield Armory c. February 1940. This rifle is a Gas Trap Variant M1 that was converted to "Gas Port" configuration after 1940 and collector restored to the original configuration using a combination of original and reproduction parts. The rifle has the correct second pattern, stainless steel, gas cylinder that lacks the lightening cuts found on the first gas cylinders. The top rear of the gas cylinder is marked with the drawing number "D-28289-1", and the right side of the front sight is marked: "B 8882-0". The receiver has the square bolt recess, and the right side is stamped with the steel lot code "REP5" above the drawing number "D28291-1". The receiver heel is roll-stamped: "U.S. RIFLE/CAL. .30 M1/SPRINGFIELD/ARMORY/32248". The rear sight cover is marked "B8872", and the aperture is stamped with the drawing number "8868-1". The edges of the windage and elevation knobs are checkered. The bolt is marked: "D28287/-1". The early "straight/curved" operating rod is marked with the drawing number "D35382-1 SA". The rifle has two keystone, square cut, compensating springs. The right side of the barrel chamber is stamped with a punch-marked "P" proof mark but no date or "SA" markings. The upper barrel band has the ferrule at the junction with the gas cylinder, and the middle and lower barrel bands are grooved. The early, "long tail" follower is marked "2" on the bottom. The operating rod catch is bright and stamped "A" on the right side. The bullet guide is marked "B8875 SA". The follower arm and follower rod are not marked. The milled trigger guard is marked: "C-46025-1SA". The trigger housing lacks a pad and is marked "B 28290 SA". The flat top safety is marked: "C-46015-4SA", and the hammer is marked "C46008-2 SA". The hammer spring tube is bright. The short throat stock has a coarse checkered buttplate with no butt-trap and is lightly stamped with the boxed "SA/SPG" final inspection mark on the left side and a encircled, block, "P" proof mark behind the trigger guard.
