"1822" dated lock and "1823" dated barrel tang. Initials "JTP" carved on left of buttstock. Background on rifling alterations of muskets is described on pages 22-26 of George D. Moller's book "American Military Shoulder Arms Volume III" with the lock and hammer of exact musket pictured on page 23 next to the caption, "Several reassembly numbers were stamped into this Model 1816 (Type II) Harpers Ferry musket when it was percussion altered and when it was subsequently rifled." The muzzle of this exact musket pictured on page 25 next to the caption, "The ramrod heads of arsenal altered and rifled muskets were cupped for the semi-pointed minie bullets."
