Experimental U.S. Springfield Model 1901 Second Type Bolt Action Rifle with Ramrod Bayonet

A fine representative example of a prototype Model 1901 second pattern rifle assembled from parts utilizing an unmarked Model 1901 receiver, an 1888 Trapdoor front ramrod bayonet ferrule, modified 1898 Krag rear sight, modern replica stock, and various modified later Model 1903 rifle parts. Two "Eagle head" marks ahead of the floor plate and behind the trigger guard. Pages 2-20 of he book "The Springfield Model 1903 Rifles" by Lieutenant Colonel William Brophy discusses the 1901 experimental rifles. The description of the 1901 Experimental rifles indicates significant variations in the features and markings of these rifles. Brophy lists thirteen actual surviving 1901 Experimental rifles serial numbered 9, 10, 12, 13, 14, 16, 17, 19, 20, 22, 26, 28 and 29 in the Springfield Armory Museum or private collections. Springfield Armory Model 1901 experimental rifles are historically significant as the predecessor to the Model 1903 rifle. Includes Rock Island Arsenal leather sling and ramrod bayonet. Provenance: The George Moller Collection
