First model integral dust cover rails and "thumb print" dust cover, as well as a special order an "extra heavy" octagon barrel and set trigger. The left side of the lower tang, stock inlet, and inside the buttplate are numbered "1398". Forend cap and bottom of buttstock are drilled for sling swivels, with filler screw in stock. The factory letter confirms the heavy octagon barrel and set trigger. The letter also states the rifle was received in the warehouse on September 28, 1878 and shipped on September 30.
