"42" dated chamber, "byf" marked toggle. Based on research presented in Don Hallock and Joop van de Kant's "The Mauser Parabellum 1930-1946" this Luger is one of "at least 5,282 pistols...delivered to the Portuguese Army, having serial numbers between 1m-5282m." These Lugers have "byf" on the toggle, "42" on the chamber, and "E/135" proofs. The authors also state, "Many were parkerized later to obtain a better protection against the humid tropical climate in the Portuguese colonies of that time: Mozambique and Angola" (page 417).
