The restamped serial number on the barrel dates to 1865, and the extensively refurbished rifle later (mostly likely late 20th century) received a factory style custom engraving. The heavily polished receiver and buttplate tang are decorated with a highly attractive motifs inspired by factory patterns featuring scrollwork on a profuse punch dot background, a large flower petal motif on the forward panel on the left and right sides of the receiver, and a dog vignette on the left side plate. See R.L. Wilson's "Winchester Engraving" pages 36 and 37 for the factory pattern that closes matches the engraving featured on this rifle. The magazine has been altered as it cannot be opened for loading. The serial number "8722" appears on the top barrel flat. Number "286" appears on the replacement buttplate. The highly figured custom made walnut stock is a replacement and could not be removed to view the tang serial number. The barrel has the two-line patent date/address marking and is fitted with a blade front sight and a folding ladder rear sight graduated to 900 yards. Provenance: The Supica Collection
