Manufactured in 1915 as part of a limited number of Model 1899 muskets delivered to the Montreal Home Guard (MHG), tasked with guarding the Canadian homefront during World War I. The MHG rack number "205" is stamped on the buttplate tang. The MHG supplied Savage with rack numbers that were applied at the factory. With a correct MHG Savage bayonet. According to Savage expert and author David Royal, "There are very few of these bayonets in existence." After the war it was common for these muskets to be sporterized, making it difficult to find a MHG Model 1899 musket in original configuration. Provenance: The Bailey Brower, Jr. Collection, author of “Savage Pistols”
