Description:

Manufactured in 1865, right around the tail end of the Civil War. "Frank W Meese/KANE/Pa" period inscribed on the left sideplate in fancy lettering. This rifle's inscription and serial number are listed on page 83 Wiley Sword's book "The Historic Henry Rifle." The consignor noted that Frank Meese mustered out prior to when the rifle likely would have been presented to him. A June 1863 Civil War draft record was located listing a 36 year old Frank W. Meese, occupation Conductor, of Pennsylvania, as well as a Civil War pension record listing a Frank W. Meese as part of Company F, 16th Ohio Infantry. The 16th Ohio Infantry is listed as active between May 3, 1861-August 6, 1861 and then again between September 23, 1861-October 31, 1864, and was involved in numerous battles throughout the Civil War including the Battle of Philippi, Battle of Rich Mountain, Battle of Chickasaw Bayou, Battle of Fort Hindman, Battle of Grand Gulf, Battle of Champion Hill, Battle of Big Black River Bridge, and the Siege of Vicksburg.

Rating Definition:

Good as converted to centerfire with attractive patina, a dovetail filled on the frame, repaired upper tang with filled holes, ill-fitting replacement stock, replaced rear sight, and general mild wear. Mechanically fine.
