Cased Pair of Colt Model 1862 Police Percussion Revolvers with Presentation Inscribed to Lieutenant George Book of the 82nd Pennsylvania Infantry

A) Colt Model 1862 Police Revolver

This pair of Model 1862 Police revolvers were manufactured in 1861 and have "Presented to Lt. G. Book by Co. A 82d PV" inscribed along the back straps. They come in a later custom case with cap tins, oiler, back shaped flask, screwdriver, and cartridge pack. Inside the lid is a portrait marked "George Book 59 Inf," a reproduction Colt label, and list of basic service information concerning George H. Book of the 82nd Pennsylvania Infantry. Copies of information about the 82nd Pennsylvania Infantry, including an 1863 roster listing George H. Book as captain of Company H, are also included. The service information lists him as enlisting on July 23, 1861, as a 1st lieutenant in Company A of the 82nd Pennsylvania Infantry, he transferred to Company E on August 20, 1861, and served as their captain, and was discharged on November 9, 1862. On July 1, 1863, he joined Company H of the 59th Pennsylvania Infantry, and mustered out on September 9, 1863. The 82nd, originally organized in Philadelphia as the 31st Regiment, initially served in the defense of Washington, D.C., until March of 1862 before being engaged in the Peninsula Campaign. They fought in several major battles, including the bloody Battle of Antietam. The 59th was part of the Provost Guard of the Army of the Potomac during his time with unit. His burial records indicate he was born in 1824 in Philadelphia and died there in 1892 and also indicate he was a member of the Volunteer Fire Association, Grand Army of the Republic, and other organizations.
