Description:

Canes reached the pinnacle of their popularity as a fashion accessory around the mid-19th, becoming extremely popular amongst the middle and upper classes of North America and Europe as a means of displaying social status. This example has a serpentine T-shaped handle of antique ivory, which is joined to the shaft by a silver band. The band is engraved with thistle and clover motifs and inscribed "FROM/T.HANSOM,/TO/JAMES LYALL/1904." The smooth shaft is ebonized and appears to have once been tipped (tip now absent). It measures 33 1/4 inches overall.

Rating Definition:

Good, the grip shows an attractively aged tone with some scattered hairline age cracks and a couple large noticeable chips. The silver band shows an attractively aged patina. The shaft is also good with scattered mild flaking of the ebonized finish.
