Description:

Smith & Wesson manufactured approximately 500 large frame Volcanic pistols from 1854-1855. Surviving examples are scarce and very desirable in any condition. This example is factory engraved. The eight-inch, .41 caliber, part-round/part-octagon barrel has an integral 10-shot magazine and a "pinched" blade front sight blade. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped: "SMITH & WESSON/CAST-STEEL/PATENT/NORWICH. CT." The top of the frame has a screw-fastened notch rear sight stamped with the number "21". The receiver sides, top, back strap, sideplates, and back of the hammer are decorated with the well-executed, open scroll engraving that was standard on S&W Volcanic pistols. Provenance: The Charles Marx Collection

Rating Definition:

Good as refinished with a mix of artificial gray and brown patina, pitting, overall crisp engraving, grips with chipped toe. Mechanically needs work as cartridge elevator does not always function properly when action is cycled.
