Manufactured 1886. "40 EX" marked at the breech end of the #3 barrel. Faint "MONTANA ARMORY/BOZEMAN, M.T." (faint) marking on the wrist. Bert Hartman's survey indicates that only 209 rifles were made in .40 Express (.40-110). The rifle is featured in the article "The Last Gallatin Valley Buffalo Hunt?" by Judge Robert M. Holter in the included copy of the Spring 2013 issue of "Pioneer Museum Quarterly." He wrote that the rifle was given to him by rancher Matt Lee who indicated the story passed down with the rifle was that it had been purchased by a rancher and used to kill the remaining bison near the ranch because they were eating their hay. Includes a "70" marked label and reloading accessories, including both original .40-110 Express casings and casings formed from .400 Nitro express and a .40-110 Express bullet mold. The original casings and mold are also shown in the article. Provenance: The Matt Lee Collection; The Judge Robert M. Holter Collection

Rating Definition:

Fine with original finish, dark brown patina, oxidation/pitting, and mild overall wear, including some chips and a hole in the stock. Mechanically fine.
