Rowlee is noted as enlisting in the navy in January of 1862 and served as paymaster on the gunboat USS Madgie. The gunboat is noted as taking part in blockade operations off the coast of Georgia, sinking one vessel and capturing another. She is also noted as reconnoitering up the Ogeechee River and engaging Confederate batteries at Fort McAllister, one of the defenses of Savannah. On 11 October 1863, Madgie sank in heavy seas off Frying Pan Shoals, North Carolina. Rowlee was discharged from the navy on 14 October 1863. Included documents note information about Rowlee and the history of the revolver.
