Fine U.S. Staff & Field Sword with Civil War Era Scabbard Inscription

36" OAL, 30" etched double fuller blade, gilt brass guard and pommel, and sharkskin grip. The scabbard is iron construction with gilt brass furniture, with the inscription "To/Capt. Chas. L. Spencer/by the Officers and/Members of Co. F./10th Regt. E.M.M./June 1683" between the throat and upper suspension band. The Enrolled Missouri Militia was established in 1862 as a supporting force for the Missouri State Militia, performing garrison/infrastructure defense duty to free up the State Militia to pursue Confederate-aligned guerrilla forces and hunt down Confederate military recruiters. Consignor-supplied photocopies of records from the Missouri Secretary of State confirm Captain Charles Spencer of St. Louis, Missouri as enrolled in the E.M.M. on September 10th, 1862 and in active service for 30 days in June and July of 1863. Records on Spencer are limited, and mostly point to a Charles Spencer identified as a Rebel officer, known jail-breaker, and post-war horse thief; it is unclear if this is a different man coincidentally sharing the name and rank or the same man having turned coat (registration with the EMM was compulsory, and more than a few secessionists swore falsely rather than face the social and physical consequences of publically declaring against the Union).

ConditionHeavy pitting concentrated at the tip, otherwise the blade is good, with strong etching and mild spotting and wear. The brass shows high point wear exposing a well aged patina, handling marks, and some heavier dings on the tip of the scabbard, and the main body of the scabbard showing wear and pitting. the grip is fair, with the wire mostly absent and some missing sections of the grip. A fine Civil War era officers sword.
