Description:

This "signal cannon" appears to be a scale patent model for Joseph P. Lavigne's 1888 patent for a breech loading cannon. Joseph P. Lavigne (1861-1941) appears to have been a very prolific inventor around the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century, with many patents for tools alone, including money wrenches, pipe wrenches, and micrometer gages. This breech loading cannon appears to be fully functional, likely with approximately 10 gauge blank shotgun shells. The barrel of the cannon is brass while the remainder of the components including the carriage appear to be made from iron, which most of the carriage finished in green enamel. The cannon appears to be secured to the carriage with modern bolts which are likely replacements. Includes copies of Lavigne's patent filing.

Rating Definition:

Very good, retaining most of the green enamel on the carriage and the brass having an attractively aged patina. Appears mechanically functional.
