Description:

The factory letter lists this revolver in .44-40 with blue finish when part of an order of 50 guns of this type shipped to Wexell & DeGress of New York City and Mexico City on September 29, 1882. Though the barrel length is not listed, the letter's remarks note that this is usually an indication of a 7 1/2" barrel. Matching serial numbers are on the cylinder, frame, trigger guard, and back strap. The revolver is accompanied by a double loop holster and cartridge belt. Includes information about the set and another being purchased by Lang Spraggins from James E. Serven stating: "I bought these two Colt 44 cal. nickel pistols. Both have belts and holsters and ivory grips. I bought them from Josephine Earp when she lived in Southern California in the early 1930s. She told me these pistols belonged to her husbands brothers who used them in the early days. She did not know which brother used which gun. She said Wyatt loved these guns because they were family guns. All the Earps are gone now and I hope you can tell some of the stories about all of these great men who tried to do good for people in their lives. This is what she said to me the day I bought these Colts." Josephine Earp was Wyatt Earp's wife from 1882 until his death in Vidal, California, in 1929. She died in Los Angeles in 1944. Provenance: Josephine Earp; The James E. Serven Collection; The Lang Spraggins Collection; Property of a Gentleman

Rating Definition:

Fine with period retailer applied nickel plating, moderate wear, pitting, and a shrunken grip with age lines. Mechanically fine. The holster and cartridge belt are fair with wear from use, alterations to the belt, and some tears and flaking. Overall, a very interesting and attractive set.
