A) U.S. Sharps New Model 1859 Rifle

Description:

Manufactured c. 1862. This single trigger Sharps New Model 1859 rifle is right after the end of the accepted serial number range of the Berdan contract Sharpshooter rifles typically seen with double set triggers, and was likely issued to another Federal unit as it has a single trigger and is bearing government inspection marks that do not include John Taylor, the inspector seen on Berdan contract rifles. Blade front sight that doubles as a bayonet lug, three-line Sharps address and "NEW MODEL 1859" on top of the barrel. Matching serial number marked on the upper receiver tang and underside of the barrel. Single letter inspection initials on some components, "M.N.M" inspection initials on the left breech of the barrel, two faintly visible boxed script inspection cartouches stamped on the left stock wrist.

Rating Definition:

Fair with some original finish, brown patina, scattered spotting and light pitting. Wood is also fair as sanded and re-oiled, with numerous scattered dents and scratches, and a few cracks in the forearm. Absent rear sight, absent rear barrel band, absent hammer, and absent primer mechanism components. Mechanically needs work.
