Attractive Gilt and Pearl Handled Cane with Ornately Inlayed Shaft

Starting in the 16th century, canes and walking sticks became extremely popular, first among royalty and nobility, and by the 19th and 20th centuries having worked their way down to the middle classes as a symbol of status. The knob shaped grip of this example is gilt with light floral designs and the initials "P.B/X" on top, each of the letters being inlaid with pink and white gemstones. The lower portion of the grip has multiple flat facets with matching and interlocking pearl facets fitted below it (one absent). The shaft is likely of fruit wood, blond in color, is inlaid with darker contrasting hardwoods in the form of a spiraling vine and floral motif, and is tipped with brass. Condition is fine, the bright gilt grip showing some scattered light handling marks, and one of the pearl facets absent. The shaft is very fine with a few scattered hairline age cracks, a few of the foliate inlays absent, and otherwise minimal handling evidence.
