Records show Ronald Hamby of Boaz, Alabama with the Army Air Force/U.S. Air Force, retiring at a rank of Lieutenant Colonel, and his father, Alexander Hamby, was a medic during World War I. Operating the P-47 Thunderbolt and later the P-51 Mustang, the 379th Fighter Squadron was stationed in England, France and Germany during the War in Europe, and was originally planned to relocate to Okinawa before V-J Day interrupted the plan. The case may have been used to send home a war trophy or similar overseas acquisition.
