Vintage Rifle Case, Marked as a Send-Home Item from a USAAF/USAF Fighter Pilot

Tan canvas construction, marked "FROM: CAPT. R. HAMBY 0-817934/362 F.G. 379TH F.S./A.P.O. 141 So P.M.,71.Y." and "TO: MR. ALEX HAMBY/RT.#3/BOAZ, ALA.". Records show Ronald Hamby of Boaz, Alabama with the Army Air Force/U.S. Air Force, retiring at a rank of Lieutenant Colonel, and his father, Alexander Hamby, was a medic during World War I. Operating the P-47 Thunderbolt and later the P-51 Mustang, the 379th Fighter Squadron was stationed in England, France and Germany during the War in Europe, and was originally planned to relocate to Okinawa before V-J Day interrupted the plan. The case may have been used to send home a war trophy or similar overseas acquisition.
