Rare Springfield Armory "Prototype" SAR-4800 Match Rifle in "5.56mm"

This is a very RARE Springfield Armory Prototype SAR 4800 Sporter model that was produced in "5.56mm". This rifle was developed sometime in the early 1980s and was intended to compete with the Colt AR-15 rifles for commercial sales. The design and manufacturing was probably done at the Imbel factory in Brazil (who Springfield Armory had a long-time relation ship with) and then imported by Springfield Armory. The rifle was built on the excellent and world famous FN-FAL (full-size) rifle action but configured to handle the 5.56mm round. The receiver itself is the same exact size and shape as the standard SAR 4800 rifle (as manufactured in 7.62MM) that has been altered in the ejector block area along with a newly manufactured, reduced magazine well assembly insert to handle the AR16/M16 style magazines. The left side of the receiver is marked "S.A.R-4800, over 5.56MM, SA-SR 1002, over SPORTER" and the right side is marked "SPRINGFIELD ARMORY, GENESEO ILL, over MADE IN BRAZIL"S. It has the type three receiver with all wood buttstock, pistol grip and forend, with the forend similar to the Israeli patter with the larger ribbed grip area and exposed gas tube on top. It is fitted with a modified top cover that has been fitted with a set of see through scope blocks that have been spot welding on top to allow the use of iron sights and is fitter with a Hensoldt-Wetzler scope (probably a 4X) that has the quick point circular reticule. This circular reticule was first used in great numbers on the Steyr AUG rifles and was said to aid the shooter in close combat by allowing the shooter's eye to automatically center the reticule on the target. It has the military style adjustable rear sight and blade front sight with an extended flash hider. It is complete with a GI Vietnam era web sling and one GI magazine

ConditionExcellent overall with 99% of the original factory black finish remaining. The wood is in excellent to mint condition overall with no handling marks. The scope is also in mint condition with crystal clear optics. The breech face of the rifle is still in he white and the rifle appears to be unfired. With the minimal recoil of the 5.56mm cartridge and the heavier weight of the FN-FAL action, this rifle would be pleasant to shoot.
