Description:

Made in 1882, and shipped to Hibbard, Spencer, Bartlett & Company of Chicago on July 18, as part of a six gun order. Blade front sight on barrel with two line Hartford address on top, "COLT . FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER" acid etched on the left, and no ejector rod housing. The cylinder is the unmarked long flute design, and the trigger guard is marked "44 CAL" on the left side. The front strap of the frame is fluted on both sides. The butt of the gun has a plugged lanyard ring hole, and the bird's-head grips are checkered hard rubber with Rampant Colt imprints at the top and diamond patterns at the bottom. With a Colt factory letter verifying that this serial number was shipped as a 4 inch barrel, 44 caliber, blue finish revolver. There is a photograph of this gun on a letter from Hibbard, Spencer, Bartlett & Co. (the subject of the letter is unclear) with the revolver covering more than half the text. This photo (not the original letter) is included with lot.

Rating Definition:

Very fine, (with exception of plugged lanyard hole) with 75% of the bright original blue finish remaining. The barrel shows some small areas of brown patina, with satin gray beginning to form around the muzzle, and some tool marks. The cylinder shows a mix of brown, gray, and blue on the raised portions, with solid original blue in the flues and satin gray at the front edge. The frame has some lines of brown running across the sides, with solid areas of brown and gray at the front strap, scratching and dings around the screws, and gray/brown in the grip area. The grips are fine, with some light wear on the checkering. The action is excellent.
