Very Late Production Model 1896 "Bolo" Broomhandle Mauser Pistol with Leather Case and Accessories

This is a nice example of a very late production M1896 "Bolo" Broomhandle Mauser pistol that is complete with a leather carrying case and accessories. This pistol was developed around 1915 and is called a Bolo because of it's distinctive shape and smaller dimensioned pistol grip, as compared to the standard 1896 Mauser pistols. These were widely sold through Europe and in the US with serial numbers found well up in the 600-700,000 range. The top of the barrel extension is marked "WAFFENFABRIK / MAUSER / OBERNDORF A/N" and the left side has a small "crown / U" proof mark with the serial number below that. The left rear milled frame panel has the distinctive Small "Mauser Banner" logo typically found on these late production Bolos and the right rear milled frame panel is marked "WAFFENFABRIK MAUSER / OBERNDORF A. NECKAR". This version has the short four inch barrel and the banded front sight with the military style tangent rear sight graduated from 50-1000 meters. The bolt also has the small "crown / U" proof on top of the rear section and the back of the hammer has the intertwined "NS" markings for "New Safety". It is correctly fitted with a set of original Bolo style grips that are numbered on the inside of each grip. It has a rust blued finish with the heat blued trigger, safety, rear sight and elevator, bolt stop, extractor and lanyard ring. As noted it is complete with a dark brown almost black leather covered carrying case that contains fourth rounds (two original boxes) of original 7.63 Mauser ammo on stripper clips and twenty rounds of Russian 7.62 Tokarev ammo on two stripper clips. The Mauser ammo is contained in the original unopened blue boxes that are marked on top with "20 / Patronen fur Selbstlade-Pistolen / MAUSER CAL 7.63 / Vollmantel / Auf Ladestreifen". This ammo was original manufactured by the RWS company and is so marked on the end label. The remaining Russian ammo is really designed for the Tokarev pistols and although it will fit in the Broomhandle pistol it is a little too hot for this type of pistol mechanism. The other accessories are a nice nine inch wooden handled cleaning rod that is stamped "GERMANY" on the handle and a small brass oil bottle. The carrying case is approximately 9 X12 X 3 inches with a green lining over the partioned compartments with a label inside the lid that reads "F. BEESLEY / Gun & Rifle Manufacturers / 2, ST. JAMES STREET, LONDON, S.W. / PALL MALL CORNER". Three is a large "Mauser Banner" Logo impressed in the leather on top of the lid. There are two locking clasps on the front and each one is marked "Made in England" with a British Patent number.

ConditionNear mint with 99.9% of a very professional rust blued finish and heat blued color on the small parts noted above. The grips are numbered on the inside and they have an excellent color with no handling marks. The markings and edges are sharp and square. The carrying case is in excellent condition and it appears that it may have been professionally constructed to match the restoration on the pistol. Still a beautiful example of a very scarce and desirable late production "Bolo" Broomhandle pistol.
