Description:

Regulation issue M1860 Light Cavalry Saber. The M1860 Saber was the primary saber used by the Federal cavalry during the Civil War and remained the standard U.S. Cavalry saber until 1906. The saber has a 34 1/2-inch fullered blade with round back, three branch brass guard and pommel and leather covered handle with twisted brass wire wrap. The scabbard is iron with two suspension rings. The left side of the blade is stamped with the "U.S." property mark above the ordnance inspector's initials "J.M." and the date of inspection: "1865". The manufacture's name and location: "EMMERSON/&/SILVER/TRENTON/NJ" is located on the opposite side of the blade. The inspector's initial's "J.M." are also stamped on top of the pommel.

Rating Definition:

Good. The blade has been cleaned and is bright with some moderate pitting near the tip. Markings are faint but legible. The white buff washer is still in place between the guard and blade. The guard and pommel have been polished bright. The guard is slightly misshapen and has numerous small dents and scratches. All of the twisted brass wire wrap remains in place. The leather grip cover is heavily worn and about 60% of the original leather remains intact. The scabbard is in fair condition; the surface has been heavily cleaned but has scattered pitting and surface discoloration. There are a number of scattered dents in the scabbard. A solid example of the primary Federal cavalry saber.
