Birmingham Small Arms Model 1914 Lewis Machine Gun, Class III/NFA C&R Fully Transferable Machine Gun

Originally developed prior to World War One, the Lewis was one of the lightest machine guns of the era, weighing in at about 28 pounds. The inventor, Lieutenant Colonel Issac Newton Lewis, established a firm in Belgium to license the design to arms manufacturers, finding interested parties at Birmingham Small Arms of Britain and Savage Arms of the United States, and both countries would take the Lewis into combat during World War One as infantry machine guns and in aircraft and vehicle mountings. Blade front and folding ladder rear sights are installed, the latter also featuring an attached brass wide aperture peep sight on top of the staff and a flip up anti-aircraft sight mounted to the cooling jacket, which is also fitted with a sling swivel, tan canvas sling and a swiveling carry handle. The sides of the receiver are marked "JPL T AZ85653" (a marking associated with NFA expert/gunsmith Pat Tomlinson), with the BSA/Lewis address and nomenclature on the top cover. Fitted with a set of smooth pistol grips and a hardwood buttstock with a steel buttplate and an integral grease pot with brush. Also included is a clamp-on bipod.

ConditionVery fine, with 80% arsenal blue finish, with areas of brown patina, scattered spotting, and mild handling marks. The front of the cooling jacket is dented. The wood is in fine condition, with mild scratches and chips. Mechanically excellent. NOTE: This weapon is a National Firearms Act (NFA), fully transferable Class 3, which is registered with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, (BATFE) that is classified as a "Curios or Relic" as defined in 27 CFR, 478.11. These weapons are still subject to the provisions of 18 U.S.C. Chapter 44 and 27 CFR part 479.
