This pair was manufactured between 1925 and 1928 according to the information given on page 114 of Nigel Brown's "British Gunmakers Volume One: London". Both guns were built with blued steel barrels featuring a single bead sight on the smooth concave solid rib which is marked "CHARLES HELLIS & SONS. 119 EDGWARE ROAD. HYDE PARK. LONDON. W." and a gold "1" or "2" surrounded by scroll engraving, a band of engraving at the breech, and 2 1/2 inch chambers with automatic ejectors. The barrels are mated to casehardened boxlock actions with recessed sideplate displaying extensive near full coverage floral scroll engraving surrounding "C. HELLIS & SONS." signatures on either side before continuing onto the triggerguard, tangs, and toplever which shows a gold 1" or "2". Both guns feature double triggers and a tang mounted automatic safety with gold inlaid "SAFE". Both guns are fitted with an attractively figured and multi-point checkered forend with engraved fittings and a "1" or "2" on the Anson button release along with a straight grip stock with teardrop carved drop points, "R.P.L." in the silver inscription oval, and a checkered bare butt. Included is a wood and leather takedown case that houses the set. Barrel and stock measurements (R/L): bore diameter nine inches from the breech proofed at "13/1" (.719 inches) and measured .738/.737 inches; choke constriction .006/.040 inches; minimum wall thickness .036/.035 inches; 1 7/16 inch drop at comb; 2 inch drop at heel; 14 3/8 inch length of pull; cast-off; weight 6 lbs. 7 oz.

Rating Definition:

Very good, retaining 95% original blue finish, 25% plus original case colors with the balance a fine grey, light handling evidence, a few light dings and scratches in the wood, slight stress crack at the upper tang, and well-defined checkering on the stock and forend. The case is good. Mechanically excellent.
