Smith & Wesson Model One, 1st Issue, Third Type Revolver with Gutta Percha Case

Manufactured circa 1858 with a spring loaded barrel catch featuring side projections as was standard on all Third Type variations. The barrel rib has the one-line address, and the cylinder has the patent date marking. Matching serial number on the butt, both grip panels, barrel and cylinder. Complete with an original Smith & Wesson Gutta Percha case with decorative relief lid showing an image of a No. 1 revolver and "MANUFACTURED ONLY BY/SMITH & WESSON,/SPRINGFIELD MASSACHUSETTS". The inside of the lid has decorative royal purple velvet, the bottom of the case is lined in red velvet, and the case contains a full cartridge block. Provenance: The TTT Collection

ConditionVery fine. The barrel and cylinder retain 75% original blue finish with the balance faded to a plum-brown. The frame retains 97% original silver plating. The grips are excellent showing minimal handling marks and retaining nearly all original varnish. Mechanically fine. The case is very fine showing minimal handling evidence on the exterior and typical high spot wear on the lining. The delicate nature of these cases meant that many did not survive, and this case is definitely in well above average condition.
