Magnificent Factory Engraved Winchester Deluxe Model 1886 Takedown Lever Action Rifle with Factory Letter

This is an extraordinary Winchester deluxe Model 1886 takedown rifle which was manufactured in 1903. It is chambered for the .33 W.C.F. cartridge and has a 24-inch rapid taper barrel, half magazine, highly figured deluxe checkered walnut pistol grip stock and hard rubber shotgun buttplate. The barrel has a Lyman "Hunting" front sight with white insert and flat top sporting style rear sight with screw-adjustable insert. The left side of the receiver is fitted with a Lyman "N-Ni" peep sight with locking lever. The upper tang is factory drilled and tapped. The forearm and pistol grip stock are deluxe, highly figured, fancy grain walnut with Winchester "Style H" checkering and a piano finish. The stock has a black hard rubber pistol grip cap embossed "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO." and a black, checkered, hard rubber, shotgun style buttplate embossed with the round "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO." logo. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "MANUFACTURED BY THE/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.-" in two lines ahead of the rear sight. "NICKEL STEEL BARREL/ESPECIALLY FOR SMOKELESS POWDER" is roll-stamped on the left side of the barrel below the rear sight. The caliber "33 W.C.F." is stamped on the top barrel flat between the rear sight and the takedown collar. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped: "-MODEL 1886-". The lower tang is stamped with the 1884 and 1885 patent dates behind the trigger and the serial number behind the rear tang screw. The rifle has a blue finish with color casehardened hammer and lever. The receiver and sides of the forearm cap are decorated with Winchester No. 10 factory engraving. No. 10 engraving was described in Winchester literature as "ornamental scrolls and embossed border work". The left side of the receiver is engraved with a game scene that depicts of a buck in a woodland setting. The included factory letter states the rifle was received in the warehouse on January 25, 1905, and shipped the next day with a round barrel in .33 caliber, plain trigger, checkered pistol grip stock, Lyman receiver sight, half magazine, shotgun butt with hard rubber buttplate, takedown configuration, and factory no. 10 engraving at an extra cost of $2.00. Provenance: The Quail Creek Collection

ConditionExcellent plus. This rifle retains 98% plus of the bright original blue finish. The casehardened components retain 97% vivid original colors. The blue components show only traces of storage wear. The barrel and half-magazine are free from the scuff marks and other finish wear typically found on takedown rifles. The Winchester factory markings and flawlessly executed factory engraving are extremely crisp. The stock and forearm are both in excellent plus condition; nearly all of the high polish piano finish remains. The checkering on the pistol grip and forearm is very sharp; wear is limited to several very minor handling marks and two small spots of flaking on the lower left side of the stock near the buttplate. This is an excellent plus example of a high condition, exceptional, factory engraved Winchester Model 1886 Takedown Rifle in caliber .33 W.C.F.
