Description:

Manufactured in 1889, this is a very fine example of a standard configuration Marlin Model 1881 rifle. The Model 1881 was just the beginning of a long line of successful lever action models for the Marlin Firearms Company, and they were one of the most legitimate competitors with Winchester for a share of the lever action market in the American West. The included copy of the factory letter lists this rifle in .38-55 caliber with a 28 inch barrel when shipped on 2 July 1889. The top flat of the barrel is marked with the two-line address and patent dates, as well as the "38-55" caliber marking at the breech. The serial number is marked on the bottom of the receiver. "A.P.WILSON" is stamped in the bottom of the buttstock just behind the lower tang as well as on each side near the buttplate. It is fitted with a German silver blade front sight, which shows period modification, and an elevation adjustable blade rear sight. It is mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with a crescent buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Very fine, retains 75% of the original blue finish and faint traces of the original case colors with the balance having thinned to mostly a smooth grey patina, a few scratches and dents on the side of the barrel and receiver showing a series of minor dings. The wood is fine with some scattered minor handling marks throughout. Mechanically excellent.
