Cased Colt Model 1855 "Root" Sidehammer Pocket Percussion Revolver

This percussion revolver was manufactured in 1856 and is the "Model 2" variant of Colt's "New Model Revolving Pocket Pistol" better known as the "Model 1855 Root" after Elisha K. Root, then superintendent at Colt's factory and later president of the company. The revolver has the 3 1/2 inch octagon barrel with a brass cone front sight and the pointing hand motif followed by "+COLT'S PT./1855+" and "ADDRESS COL. COLT/HARTFORD, CT. U.S.A.+" on top, the cabin and Indian fight scene on the cylinder, a smooth grip, and matching serial numbers on the cylinder, barrel, and butt. The revolver comes in a partitioned hardwood case with W.&C. Eley cap tin, double sided eagle powder flask, and "COLTS/PATENT" marked two cavity brass bullet mold. Provenance: Property of a Distinguished Southern Clergyman

ConditionFine, retaining 60% original blue finish on the barrel and frame with smooth brown patina on the balance. The refinished cylinder has some dings with most of the scene remaining. Patterns of original case colors remain. The grip is fine with minor handling marks and retaining much of the original varnish. Mechanically excellent. The relined case is good with minor handling/storage marks on the exterior and typical high spot wear on the lining.
