Description:

Reportedly, 3,359 Springfield Model 1847 Artillery Musketoons were manufactured between 1848-1859, with many subsequently arsenal altered to different configurations. These musketoons were used by the army in conflicts with Native Americans in the 1850s and during the Civil War. The Artillery model features a lower stud for use with a socket bayonet, sling swivels mounted on the bottom of the rear barrel band and bottom of the buttstock, and a trumpet-head ramrod. The front barrel band has a brass blade front sight on the upper strap. Eagle with shield above "US" at the center of the lock with "SPRING/FIELD/1853" at the tail of the lock, "1852" dated barrel tang, "V/P/eagle head" proofs on the left quarter of the breech, and the left stock flat is stamped with a circled script "ADK" cartouche.

Rating Definition:

Very good showing untouched darkened brown appearance overall, some scattered mild pitting and corrosion, and clear markings on the lock and barrel. Stock is also very good with a visible cartouche, scattered scratches and dents, a crack on the left ahead of the rear lock screw, and defined edges. Mechanically excellent.
