Manufactured in 1949, the Model 71 was intended to be an updated version of Winchester's venerable Model 1886. It has the standard Winchester factory oval proofs on the barrel and receiver at the breech. The upper left of the barrel has the standard proof steel, Winchester trademark, model, and caliber markings. It is fitted with a ramped, hooded, and beaded blade front sight, a filler in the rear sight dovetail, and an added Lyman 56 peep sight mounted on the left of the receiver. It is mounted with a checkered forearm and pistol grip stock with a hard rubber grip cap, sling swivels, and a checkered steel buttplate.
