Approximately 8,000 Model 1864 Joslyn carbines were purchased by the Ordnance Department during the Civil War. The Joslyn was one of the more widely used carbines during the war, with this example remaining in "as issued" condition. This exceptional, extremely early production serial number 6 Joslyn .52 rimfire carbine retains the lockplate markings and serial number locations found on this model and has the unusual hand engraved "U.S." on the buttplate tang. This Joslyn carbine does not have military inspector cartouches on the stock; however, there is a "P" sub-inspection mark located on the saddle ring bar plate. It is possible that this was a sample carbine retained by the factory or one commercially sold for use by one of the state regiments; however, it was clearly never issued or used.
