Description:

Approximately 8,000 Model 1864 Joslyn carbines were purchased by the Ordnance Department during the Civil War. The Joslyn was one of the more widely used carbines during the war, with this example remaining in "as issued" condition. This exceptional, extremely early production serial number 6 Joslyn .52 rimfire carbine retains the lockplate markings and serial number locations found on this model and has the unusual hand engraved "U.S." on the buttplate tang. This Joslyn carbine does not have military inspector cartouches on the stock; however, there is a "P" sub-inspection mark located on the saddle ring bar plate. It is possible that this was a sample carbine retained by the factory or one commercially sold for use by one of the state regiments; however, it was clearly never issued or used. Provenance: The David Aroh Collection

Rating Definition:

Excellent plus. The barrel and rear sight retain 98% plus deep, vivid original blue with only a few minor scratches and some slight thinning forward the front sight. The lockplate, breechblock, triggerguard, saddle ring bar plate, barrel band, and buttplate retain 97% vibrant original case colors. The buttplate has some dark speckling stains present. All screw heads retain most of the bright original blue finish as does the barrel band spring. All markings are razor sharp. The stock is also excellent plus, retaining all original oil finish with just a few miniscule dings from handling only. This all original serial number 6 is certainly one of the finest U.S. Joslyn Model 1864 carbines in existence.
