Description:

This is a spectacular example of a U.S. martially inspected Savage Navy model revolver, and one of the highest condition specimens Rock Island Auction Company has ever had the opportunity to offer. Of the approximately 20,000 Savage Navy revolvers manufactured between 1861-1865, the Ordnance Department reportedly purchased 11,984 during the Civil War, and nearly all of those saw hard use, making this nearly as issued example an extreme rarity. Features a heart shaped trigger guard with round cocking lever, off-set hammer, six-shot gas-sealing cylinder, octagon barrel and hinged loading lever. Single letter ordnance sub-inspection marks on various components. Serial number "1194" marked on the right of the grip frame, underneath the barrel, on the back of the cylinder, and handwritten on the interior of the left grip panel. Crisp bordered script "JT" (John Taylor) and "W.A.T." (William A. Thornton) inspection cartouches stamped on the left and right grips respectively, and both grips are also stamped with inventory number "1496" attributed to the U.S. Cartridge Company collection. High polish blue finished barrel, frame and cylinder, casehardened loading lever, hammer, trigger, ring lever and trigger guard, and oil finished walnut grip panels. Provenance: The Andrew Singer Collection

Rating Definition:

Excellent plus, nearly as issued overall, retains 98% plus highly attractive original bright high polish blue finish and 98% vivid original case colors with some minor fading on top of the hammer, a few scratches notable on the left sideplate, zero evidence of firing around the percussion nipples, and absolutely sharp markings and edges in the metal overall. Grips are also excellent with rich original oil finish, a few light scratches, and distinct edges and stamps. Mechanically excellent. This is one of the finest Civil War U.S. martially inspected Savage Navy revolvers extant, and would be nearly impossible to improve upon!
