This shotgun has a single bead sight on an elevated concave solid rib marked "JOSEPH MANTONS . PATENT . ELEVATION". The serial number (faded) is marked on the underside of each barrel. The rib extension, locks, hammers, trigger guard, and forearm forend are engraved with floral leaf designs. The locks are marked "JOSEPH MANTON/LONDON". Joseph Manton was a London gun maker active from 1795-1830 and was noted for his firms finely crafted flintlock and percussion fowling pieces and hunting guns. He introduced the V shaped priming pan to flintlocks, and later held patents for the elevating rib and a percussion tube lock among others. His son continued the business after his death in 1835 until 1870. Many of Manton's employees went on to start their own successful businesses including James Purdey of James Purdey and Sons. The pineapple trigger guard finial, escutcheons, and ramrod tailpipe are also engraved. It is mounted on a one-piece checkered walnut straight grip half stock with a fire blued buttplate with engraved extended tang. A ramrod with brass ends is mounted below the barrels. Measurements: Weight - 7 pounds 9.8 ounces, chokes - full, length of pull - 13 3/4 inches, drop at comb - 1 3/8 inches, drop at heel - 2 3/4 inches. It comes set in a wooden case with brass rings and disk inserts with an engraved reposed lion and an olive green felt lining with a "JOSEPH MANTON/GUNMAKER" label affixed to the inside of the lid. The case contains a powder flask, shot bag, wads, cap tin, and tools.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The shotgun retains 60% of the brown finish on the Damascus patterned barrels with some light scratches and marks. Original case colors are present with only traces on the left lock plate but strong retention on the hammers and visible colors on the right lock plate. The upper tang has faded traces of the case colors. The trigger guard and buttplate retain 70% of the fire blue finish with the high edges faded to bright. The blued initial plate on the upper wrist has some light fading. The other components have an aged silver patina. The wood is good with some crisp checkering, some small cracks on the butt, some chips on the upper edges of the forend, and some minor scratches and scattered small dings. The action is excellent and most markings are clear. The case is good with a crack running along the top from the left side to the middle of the case along with some cracks on the lid and minor wear on the exterior along with stains in the interior.
