Description:

Offered here is a highly attractive exceptional example of a U.S. Springfield Model 1816 flintlock musket that shows almost no evidence of having seen use. Model 1816 muskets were primarily used in conflicts with various Native American groups after the War of 1812. They were also used into the Mexican-American War era and the Civil War, generally after being converted to percussion. Features a top mounted bayonet stud towards the muzzle, brass blade front sight on the rear strap of the front barrel band, "c/a 32" marked on top of the barrel at the breech, "P/eagle head/V" proofs at the left of the barrel at the breech, "1829" date marked on the barrel tang, "SPRING/FIELD/1829" marked at the rear of the lock and an eagle with shield motif above "US" at the center, circled script "ET" (Elisha Toby) inspection cartouche ahead of circled script "JH/3" classification stamp, "JR" ahead of a circled script "JS" inspection cartouche stamped behind the lower tang, and "US" marked buttplate tang. Provenance: The Andrew Singer Collection

Rating Definition:

Excellent, nearly as issued with 90% plus of the original brown lacquer finish, some general flaking, bayonet rub wear, 95% original case colors visible on the lock assembly, 90% original niter blue finish on the frizzen spring, and absolutely sharp markings and edges in the metal overall. The stock is also excellent with some scattered light dents and scratches, a few chips with an absent section visible below the left of the breech, attractive original raised grain, distinct edges overall and exceptionally crisp cartouches. Mechanically excellent. Included bayonet is very fine. This is one of the highest condition Springfield Model 1816 contract muskets extant, very difficult to improve upon and would make an excellent addition to any U.S. martial collection!
