Description:

The lock is marked "1863/TOWER" at the center and St. Edward's Crown without the "VR" below at the rear indicating this was a commercial arm, not one accepted by the British government. Many British companies exported rifles for use by both the Confederacy and the Union during the American Civil War. In fact, the Pattern 1853 "Enfield" is said to be the second most widely used rifle of the war. Solid front sight that doubles as a bayonet lug, and 900 yard ladder rear sight. The barrel has the standard double 25 bore size marks indicating .577 caliber. Includes a socket bayonet (does not properly lock on the rifle), a leather scabbard with brass ends, and a period muzzle plug. Provenance: Property of a Distinguished Southern Clergyman

Rating Definition:

Exceptionally fine, retains 85% plus original blue finish with some light flaking on the bands and smooth brown patina on the balance, 70% muted case colors visible on the lock and 85% on the hammer, and sharp markings and edges in the metal overall. Brass is excellent and exhibits a pleasing untouched golden aged patina. Stock is excellent with attractive original raised grain and rich oil finish, a few light dings and handling marks, and distinct edges overall. Mechanically excellent. Bayonet and scabbard are both very fine. This exceptional Pattern 1853 Enfield rifle-musket would be difficult to improve upon and is a must have for any Civil War collection!
